The earliest recorded strike dates back to 1636 when a fisherman's strike took place on a small island off the coast of Maine. These strikes throughout the years met with violence and no real positive outcome for the worker. This did not deter the fighting spirit of the worker as they kept striking and picketing in hopes gaining higher wages, better benefits and stronger work conditions that would benefit them.
Our brothers and sisters in labor who came before us paved the way for the wages, benefits and working conditions we enjoy today. Some prospered in these efforts while others lost their lives in fighting for what is right. Thankfully today we do not have to deal with the acts of violence as you are granted the right to organize and be represented by a union of your choice. This came about with the foundation of the National Labor Relations Board on July 5, 1935. Two hundred and ninety-nine years after the first recorded strike the workers finally had a voice of their own.
Today you have the opportunity for your voice to be heard by seeking to be organized by Special and Superior Officers Benevolent Association.
